Books and more....

So I know I said I didn't plan on talking about the Harry Potter books, but truly, how can I not?  They are so wonderful.  I just started #4 (Goblet of Fire) and now I'm getting into the books that I didn't read.  (I stopped reading them when the movies started because the movies followed the stories so closely--and with young kids I KNEW I'd be seeing the movies hundreds of times).  Anyway, what a brilliant writer JK Rowling is.

Also finished REVENGE WEARS RUBIES.  Loved it.  Renee Bernard creates the best characters and her books manage to be smoking hot and still be highly emotional.  Looking forward to the next book in the series!

What are you reading?  I've been getting great recommendations so keep them coming!

And now a contest.  Prize?  Reader's choice of one of my Erin Grady books (Whispers, Echoes).  To win, tell me what the "IT" factor is for the heroine's in your favorite books.  What is the one thing the leading lady MUST have/do/be to really make you relate to her?  (If there's more than one, by all means, let me know).

Happy Reading!
Erin

Confident and strong on the outside, even if she feels a little insecure on the inside.

I like the heroines to be giving and/or nurturing. Puts a warm spot in my heart.

I like 'em kind of like I like my heroes: independent, brilliant, with a fiery spirit and good strong libido **I mean, why do the guys get to have all the fun?!?! :)** I also enjoy a character with great wit and humor!

One that stands up for herself and doesn't need a man to take care of her. One that doesn't swoon at his feet

Thanks for the question, Erin. My tastes in heroines in both fiction and real life are pretty broad. I don't have any one favorite type. But there's one thing each of them shares in common.

There MUST be something interesting going on in her life. The situation and the way she deals with it must offer me something I can relate to. That's what snags my interest. It's not just a matter of what she does; it's who she is.

Keep up the good work!

I like my heroines to be smart and sassy, yet not so strong they don't need a man in their life.

Hi Erin,

You're reading Harry Potter! I love the HP series. It's been a long while since i read on of them. I watch the movies quite frequently, and not because my son wants to...I just like 'em! :D

As for what I'm reading. Well, the hero's name is Rory and his heroine's name is Saraid! I only just started it, but I would definitely recommend it :P!

EEEP! Amy, I'm so excited to hear what you think of Haunting Warrior. You'll be the first to review it, I think! (Glimpse into my inner insecure writer--I'm always so scared when no one has read my book and I'm wondering if anyone will like it) Okay, guess I just shared that with the world, LOL.

PS: LOVING the HP books. So glad I'm being "forced" to read them!

I'm really not that far, only about 60 some pages, but woman, you should have no insecurities whatsoever! I think you are amazing! Truly. You have a way with your words that breath life into what you are describing!

But I do understand, I don't write, but as someone who reviews, I get nervous that my reviews are not always adequate enough, but I do the best I can and hope they do some good in making people want to pick up the book and read it for themselves.

Ah, lass, y' done my heart good. :) And for the record, I love your reviews. :) Even when you don't like a book, you still approach it professionally and offer some of its good qualities and acknowledge the fact that it's work of art not everyone will appreciate instead of getting all snarky. There's one reviewer I know (though not personally) who is so mean that it always feels like she's showing off--you know--see what a tough reviewer I am?

I was raised under a strict code of do unto others so I don't get this, but hey, what goes around comes around, right?

Okay, off my soap box. You made my night! Thanks for the wonderfully kind words!

Thank you, Erin. Y' done my heart proud too!

I can't be snarky. I don't even know how to be. If I think I'm saying something nasty about a book I have to back space and start over. Usually if I have an issue with a book, I have my mom to discuss it with, since we generally read the same books. There was one review that I had written, and I had a few issues with it and I stated them in my reivew, but before I posted it, I sent it to the author to read. We discussed some of those issues and listening to her point of view, I changed a few things. Overall my opinion was still mine. I don't think the review leaned toward the author any more than it did originally. It was helpful for me to do that.

I have come across some really trashy review sites and I never go back a second time. I just don't see the point in being mean and nasty and sarcastic. A lot of time is spent writing those books and if I were on the receiving end, well, I may not want to write again. There is always a gentler way to review a book if you did not like it. And besides, I wouldn't feel so good about myself if I was intentionally being mean because something didn't agree with me.

Hey Erin!
Revenge Wears Rubies sounds great! My "It" heroine must have courage even when she thinks she doesn't. She has to pull it out of herself and give it all she's got. And she, of course, has to be likable, friendly and down to earth!
Hoep you're doing well!

I love heroes and heroines who have a sense of humor. I also like heroines who are selective and don't fall for guys who don't deserve them. Maybe this comes to mind because I recently read a romance book where the hero(heel)
called the heroine every insulting thing he could come up with and she still fell in love with him. I would have told him where to go and it would not have been Disney World. Heroines should not be that desperate to get a man.

She must be smart, brave, and take no gruff from a man!

With some wit, sass, and razz-ma-tazz thrown in!

Thanks,
Tracey D

Gladys, love that comment--worthy of the quote of the day! "I would have told him where to go and it would not have been Disney World."

So, not the happiest place on earth, then? :)
