Shaking It Up -- Favorite Scene

"Sometimes I feel like I’m spinning my wheels," Daisy said in a low voice. "Doing what I do. I mean, it’s more than mixing cocktails. It’s more than I ever expected, being a part owner of a successful place like With a Twist. But….”

“But?”

She looked away and caught her bottom lip with her teeth. Rome reached out and brushed his fingertips against her mouth, forcing her to release it. Those wide eyes looked into his and he felt that tightness around his heart and lungs.

“But?” he repeated softly.

“Sometimes I feel like I don’t belong,” she whispered. She laughed, but the sound held a ring of sadness. “Jasmine and Rose—the other owners and my friends—they’re both amazing. Jasmine manages our business and finances. Rose…” She shook her head. “Well you ate her food. She’s a genius.”

“No argument there,” he said. Dinner last night had been delicious. She’d turned a piece of chicken into a gourmet meal.

“The truth is, I’m a fake. I have to troll the web for drink ideas. I’m not even smart enough to come up with them myself.”

She gulped in a big breath of air, as if she’d just confessed to something so appalling that it had stolen the oxygen from her body. Her cheeks pinked and she looked away.

“I think you’re plenty smart enough. Mixing drinks just isn’t where you’re heart’s at.”

Those incredible eyes came up and round, so vulnerable and hopeful that Rome found himself struggling to breathe, too.

“You’re looking for your bliss,” he said.

She cocked her head, questioning, her eyes shimmering in the subdued lighting.

“Something my father quotes—from a famous scholar. He says you should follow your bliss. Do what’s in your heart. Of course, sometimes it’s easier to quote than apply it to life, but it’s true.”

“What if you don’t know what that is?” she asked in a low voice. “What if you don’t know your own…bliss?”

In that moment, Daisy struck him as a paradox—so supremely confident in her red dress and high heels and so incredibly fragile beneath the silken shroud. She was the kind of woman men slay dragons for and he wanted to beat down the fire breathing beasts that had put such vulnerability in her beautiful eyes.

The idea of it rattled him. He straightened, taking a step back, but he couldn’t look away. “There’s nothing you’ve always wanted to do?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know…after my mother died, I…. Well, I never finished college. I’m not qualified for anything.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

She tilted her head down and her hair made a satin veil around her face, hiding her expression from him. But he could sense the turmoil going on inside her. It had taken him a long time to justify leaving a career many would kill for, to do something that others considered manual labor. Saying what he wanted had been the first and hardest step. After that, everything fell into place. Articulating his dreams had been the catalyst to making them come true.

“I guess I’d like to go back to school,” she murmured so softly that he almost missed it. “Study art. Maybe….” She shrugged. “It’s crazy. Do you know how hard it is to make a living as an artist?”

She ran her fingers through her hair in a careless move and gave him a hundred watt smile that dazzled him while at the same time, left him feeling strangely dissatisfied. It took him a moment to realize why. The smile was as much a disguise as the dress and the blithe flip of her hair.

“Don’t,” he said, without meaning to.

The smile faltered and her gaze searched his. He would swear she’d heard his thoughts.

“You’re right,” she murmured. “It’s not real.”

“But you are, Daisy. Life’s too short to pretend.”

She nodded once—a brief, jerky motion that revealed so much. He sensed that inside her, something had clicked into place. Perhaps voicing the dream she’d thought silly had given it substance.

“You’re not what I expected,” she said after a moment.

“And what did you expect?”

She shrugged, avoiding his eyes, and he laughed.

“I’m not going to let you get away with that, Daisy. What did you expect? Tell me.”

She shifted uncomfortably, crossing her long legs and then uncrossing them again. “I don’t know. I guess I thought you’d be a little conceited. Fast and loose with the lines.”

Shocked, he asked, “Why would you think that?”

Her cheeks flamed as she pointed at him, twirling her finger to indicate his whole appearance. He stopped his automatic impulse to check his fly and tried to look nonplussed. But he felt like he was ten and being teased on the playground

“Look at you,” she said with a hasty gulp of her wine. “I mean, really.”

He couldn’t help it, he looked down, imagining his buttons done up crooked or two different shoes on. Surreptitiously, he brushed a hand over the front of his pants. Nope, fly was shut.

Daisy let out a soft laugh that feathered against his senses. “You’re gorgeous, Rome,” she said. “You can’t tell me you don’t know that.”

It was his turn to blush—hot and hard—while Daisy grinned at him, obviously enjoying his embarrassment.

“Definitely not what I expected,” she said again, in a throaty voice that turned the blood suffusing his face south to another part of his body.

When he’d walked into With a Twist last night, he could have sworn the earth had moved. He felt that again, now. Here. Because of her.

Pitching his voice low so she’d have to lean in to hear, he said, “That’s funny, because you’re everything I expected. Even more.”

He watched her digest that, wash it down with another sip of wine, and then stare deeply into his eyes. She looked like she might say something and his guess was that she’d try to brush off his words as a cheap line rather than believe that he saw something extraordinary in her. But she must have read the truth in his steady gaze because she held her breath and her beautiful eyes widened.

Without thought, he leaned closer and took in that wonderful scent of hers that made his brain feel hot and his skin tight. She watched him, her gaze intent and unflinching. And then he closed the distance between them and pressed his mouth to hers.

He’d meant the kiss to be fleeting. A testing of waters. An introduction and invitation. Perhaps even a question. But the moment their lips touched, he ceased to think. Her mouth moved beneath his, and his tongue whispered across her bottom lip, caressing its fullness. She tasted of wine and sunshine, the kind that warmed the soul and rejuvenated the spirit. Her scent wrapped around him, clean and exotic, pure and erotic all at the same time.

When it came to women, Rome wasn’t the kind of guy who went straight for the goal. He didn’t view dating like a doorway to sex. He wasn’t into the one-night stand. He liked to know more than a woman’s name before he took her into his bed—he liked to know who she was inside.

But with this woman, he already felt connected. He sensed that beneath the surface of Daisy L’Amore, he’d find something he’d been looking for most of his life.

Still, the next words out of his mouth, took him completely by surprise.

“Do you want to get out of here?” he breathed against her lips, stunned by his own audacity and floored by the way every cell in his body begged her to say yes.

She pulled away for just an instant and stared into his eyes. Her lids looked heavy and slumberous, but what he saw in those vibrant depths was wide-awake and matched the yearning of his own emotions. He saw uncertainty and longing, rejection and acceptance, joy and fear. That look seemed to articulate all of the confused and overpowering emotions clamoring for attention inside of him.

“And go where?” she asked, the breath of her voice a heated sensation against his lips.

“With me,” he answered simply.

Romance Writers Rock

Thank you to Erin Quinn for inviting me to her blog today!

My first paranormal romance, Night Walker, was released in August, but before I became a debut author, I was a romance reader who loved meeting authors. (Okay I still am, but you know what I mean, right? :)

Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to meet many of my favorite romance authors at book signings and conferences. I’ve emailed with others too, but the unifying trait that I found with romance and urban fantasy authors was this.

These amazing writers love their readers!!!

And as my book got closer to publication, I discovered another romance author trait… Many romance authors spend lots of time helping and encouraging new writers. As a debut author, the biggest hurdle has been to get the word out about my book. Since I’m a new writer, just building a readership, most people aren’t going to know to search for my book on Amazon or Barnes & Noble. I was stunned by the support I received from established romance authors.

(Note from Erin--Lisa is such a lovely, warm person, who wouldn't want to support her? :)

When I stepped across the line, from romance reader to romance author, many published authors, like Erin, offered to let me guest blog, they posted on facebook and tweeted on twitter. I get teary-eyed thinking about the fabulous women who have helped me on this journey.

What other industry in this competitive world we live in would be so welcoming?

At the RWA National Conference this summer, NYT Bestselling Author, Sherrilyn Kenyon gave an inspiring speech about her publishing journey and reminded us that there is room on the NYT list for everyone. She encouraged writers to support each other and stand together while the publishing world shifts.

I’ve been doing my best to reach out to readers through social media, (and giving away lots of romance trading cards! LOL) but without the help of amazing romance authors like Erin Quinn, I’m pretty sure I’d still be treading water!

(another side note from Erin...aww, shucks. Lisa, I'm a firm believer in paying it forward. If you get to that NYT list before, remember me, ok? :)

Recently I was a finalist in the paranormal catagory of the Booksellers Best contest (and I won!!!) which was very exciting. I was so thrilled by it all, that I started reading some of the other finalists in both paranormal and historical which are my favorite categories. Almost as thrilling as being one of the final few in this contest, was the great new authors I discovered. I absolutely LOVE discovering new authors--although sometimes I don't manage to discover them until late in their careers, lol.

One of the first books from Booksellers Best that I read blew me away. Titled CAPTURED by Julia Rachel Barnett, it's a fast-paced science fiction story that shouldn't have been my cup of tea (because I don't read much science fiction) but it totally was. The heroine is so tough and likeable, and the hero such a great man who changes so much. I really thought it was great. No surprise, this book won the Best First Book category in the contest!

Captured

When Erin read my science fiction novella, Captured, and invited me to write a guest post for her blog, I was thrilled, humbled, excited and nervous - she is so far out of my league. But, how could I turn down such a generous offer to talk about Captured?

This book is such a big part of me. I am in love with the story and the two main characters, Mari and Ekkatt. The truth is, the book began as a dream. It may sound odd, but while I was in the middle of working on a four-book science fiction series, I dreamed Captured from start to finish. I stopped the series and wrote Captured in three weeks. It wasn’t all that hard, I simply recorded the dream, conversations and all. Thus Ekkatt and Mari sort of sprang from the top of my head fully-formed like a fantasy Athena.

The novella is a bit of a morality play. Mari is a woman captured for the meat market by trappers from advanced species, a species that officially considers us to be at the same evolutionary level as apes. While Ekkatt’s people, the Atun, are vegetarians, many other species in his quadrant of the galaxy have developed a taste for human flesh and the trade is quite lucrative. Humans are an oddity, a curiosity. The species populating the planets Ekkatt is familiar with are singular. For example, all Ekkatt’s people have black hair, bronze skin and yellow eyes, while we come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. He notices Mari because he is attracted by the sun shining off her red hair.

When Mari wakes from stasis during the voyage and Ekkatt has the opportunity to interact with her, he gradually comes to the disturbing realization that everything he’s been taught about humans is a lie. While humans may not be as technologically advanced as the Atun, they are every bit as intelligent and civilized, and most important, they possess a soul, the one thing the religious authorities of Atun insist a human does not possess.

Once Ekkatt’s eyes are opened, he cannot close them again and he is rocked by what he’s done; he’s sent sentient beings to their deaths. His entire world view is upended. Overwhelmed by guilt, he decides that although he cannot save all the cargo, he will risk everything to save this one human woman.

Thus begins the impossible love story of Mari and Ekkatt. I think it’s a beautiful tale. If a reader asked me to recommend only one of my books, I would recommend Captured.

Life or something like it

I wonder if anyone in today's world doesn't feel like every day is a juggling act. Family, career, responsibilities, friends, pets.... Some days it's just flat out impossible to keep all my balls in the air.

The past month has been especially hard. I've been on the road a lot. I like to travel, but I am a quintessential homebody. I look forward to just being home. My husband travels way more than I do and I know I'd be miserable in that kind of job.

So for me, traveling (in a non-vacation capacity, of course) is grueling. It messes up my schedule and it exhausts me. I don't sleep at the same times, I don't get up at the same times, and I don't do anything else at the same times either. In June, I did a week-long series of meetings in Santa Clara, California and then I turned around, spent a few brief days at home and did another week-long conference (Romance Writers of America National conference where I met on of my favorite authors, Nalini Singh!) in New York City, New York. A few days back from that and I was off to Utah to stay with my critique partner and brainstorm our new books. I get a couple of weeks respite before I head to Denver, Colorado to see my sister and attend RomCon. (If you're in the area, you should come see me there. It's a fun conference and not too hard on the pocketbook either. Plus if you use my reg code you get $20 off).

Anyway, during all this, my oldest child has been in Spain acting as an au pair to five year old twins and my youngest has been in summer mode (which means she and her girl friends have sleep overs almost every night, stay up late and sleep until the afternoon). I see her for about 10 minutes a day. My husband and I have managed to high-five each other as we pass at the front door. The dogs and I have managed to spend some quality time together...but only just. :)

And somewhere in there I've been trying to help spread the word about the two releases I have coming up. Haunting Beauty will be having a re-release in mass market paperback (originally published in Trade paperback in 8/09. If you've been meaning to read it, you'll find it in bookstores again in September!)

Haunting Embrace, the last in my Mists of Ireland series (at least for now) will be out in October 2011. I am really excited about this one! The trailer will be coming soon so I can share the story line with you.

Anyway, that's my summer in a nutshell--juggling. How has yours been?

There’s been a lot of talk these days about Michael, Brethren Protector. And rightly so. He’s the hero in TRINITY, Book 1 in the Brethren Series, and there’s a ton to discuss there- his tortured past, the fact that he’s an immortal and an angel, just to mention a few. But now, I feel it’s time to focus attention on Emma Livingston, our heroine. She’s a complicated woman, and given her background, there is much to discuss and admire.

Emma is one fierce mother. Who she is and who she becomes has been shaped long before she was ever born. Sad part about it is, she never knew. But the truth of her lineage and what she has inherited comes to light in a very disturbing set of circumstances. This knowledge threatens the well-being of her daughter, Hannah.

This is where her fierceness comes into play. Hannah is being stalked and terrorized in her dreams by Satan’s henchman, Agremon. Satan needs this child to succeed in his plans for world domination. Now if you were Emma, would you stand for that? Didn’t think so. And neither does she. Doing whatever she must, she protects her daughter from Evil, no matter the consequences to herself.

Time and again, throughout the story, Emma reveals herself as a woman who distrusts many and tries to insulate herself and her daughter from the harsh realities of the world. Going through a divorce, while being pregnant, can do that to a person. Having one’s best friend being the other woman makes it that much worse. Therefore, deciding to join forces with the Brethren was not an easy one. And all along the way, she is conflicted. To trust or not to trust, that is the question. Years of cynicism have not been kind and prey upon her conscience.

{…“Emma, I’m so sorry. I thought we would have more time before they arrived. I….” He reached for her arms.

She shrugged him off, not wanting to be calmed or comforted at the moment. “Don’t you give me that bullshit, Michael! You’ve had plenty of time to tell me everything…

Emma’s dedication to her daughter’s safety makes her lose objectivity in certain situations and she winds up making impulsive decisions with dire consequences. Decisions that any one of us would make if we were in her shoes.

{…“Enough of this!” Emma snapped, stepping forward. She whipped her head around to Namirha. “We have a deal, Namirha. I suggest you tend to it.” Through their threaded connection, she told Hannah to do whatever Namirha told her to do. Hannah’s face flushed a brilliant red.

“What have you done, Mother? What have you done?” she shouted angrily.

“The only thing I could, angel. I saved your life…”}

Erin, thanks so much for hosting me at your blog today. And thank you for asking me to talk about the hero of my latest book.

Sam Robertson, from my Harlequin American Romance, A RANCHER’S PRIDE (May 2011), has to be one of my all-time favorites. I’ll explain why in a minute. But first, here’s a bit about his story:

Sam Robertson's life just changed. In one short day, he found out that he's a daddy; that his beautiful little girl, Becky, is deaf; and that her aunt, sign language teacher Kayla Ward, intends to fight him for custody.

There are plenty of reasons Sam shouldn't fall for Kayla. A city girl like her has no place on his ranch, particularly when she's his ex-wife's gorgeous sister. But thanks to the judge's orders, Sam's spending a lot of time with Kayla, trying to give Becky the stable home she's never known.

I did what authors are supposed to do to keep readers interested in their characters: Hit ’em while they’re down. Pile on the conflict. Make things worse.

What hooked me about this story was the idea of taking a well-loved plot twist—having a hero suddenly “inherit” a child, one he had never known he’d fathered—and make his conflict even more heart-wrenching by having the child speak a language he can’t understand.

I have to tell you, how Sam would react to all this really worried me!

He might have had the weaker case—and the weaker determination—because he’d never had a relationship with his daughter. To up the ante, I whispered in his ear that this could be the only child he would ever have. And to my relief, the challenge made him fight harder—of course! After all, he’s real hero material.

Not one twist in the story comes easily to him, though.

The title of the book, A RANCHER’S PRIDE, fits the story perfectly and describes Sam’s entire dilemma:

First, he’s a very proud man who doesn’t want to accept help from anyone—especially not from the heroine. Having to rely on her at times during the story only adds to the conflict between them.

In addition, his pride has been battered from actions his ex-wife had taken in the past and that affect him even today.

Finally, though he struggles along the way, he soon comes to love his daughter, and she becomes his pride and joy.

Sam learns. He changes. And he grows.

The scene in the book when he first attempts to make a connection with Becky—when he waits, heart in his throat, to see how she will respond—made me cry. I recently re-read the book and cried again.

Okay, I’ll confess! I’m tearing up just thinking about it.

All of the above is what makes me love Sam Robertson. I hope readers love him, too.

I’ve had lots of great feedback about the picture of Sam on the cover! He’s a real hottie, isn’t he? His looks are what attract Kayla to him instantly, and I’ll admit I wasn’t immune to them, either.

Hi Erin, thanks for inviting me today. It's always a pleasure to stop by and chat with you. Especially about men. But not just any men, hunky heroes at that. And the one in my newest release is definitely one of those. He's stopped by so I could ask him a few questions and he actually agreed to answer them.

Cole Preston tell me one interesting fact about you? I love to cook. If I hadn't gotten into home renovation, I probably would have become a chef. Just between you and me, though I love to watch the cooking shows. But don't tell anyone or it will ruin my manly image.

What do you like to do in your down time? I've always enjoyed working with my hands. Even as a kid I loved going to workshops at the local hardware store and building things. That's probably why I'm in construction. Now I've been given a chance to teach these workshops and I'm looking forward to spending time with the next generation of kids.
What's the one thing you dreaded doing but had to? Going back to the place where I grew up. I had a rough childhood and got into trouble. The residents of Dynamite Creek hold grudges, and it's been tough ignoring the stares and hearing the whispers. I made mistakes. Everyone has. Those people are not giving me credit for trying to atone for my past. The only one that is giving me a chance is the one woman who has the biggest reason not to.
What makes you afraid? Nothing. But I don't like dealing with rejection.
What is the most important thing to you? My reputation. Since I'm a contractor, my reputation is everything. It took years to build and only a few weeks to tear apart because of my ex-partner. I can only pray that once I finish this last job, I can move forward and start rebuilding my reputation and put my past behind me.

Finally ready to settle down, Abby Bancroft has just inherited a place to put down roots. But her hopes for a successful bed-and breakfast are placed on hold when she learns that her grandparents’ run-down inn is in serious need of TLC. So is Cole Preston, the handsome contractor who offers to help make her dream a reality. His past mistakes won’t let him consider settling in the close knit town. Yet as he and Abby work together to repair the house, they also begin to mend each other’s hearts. And they just may find that consulting their hearts is what creating a home is all about.

"This is it?" Wide-eyed and a little confused, Abby Bancroft stared out the passenger side window of the Ford Escort parked in front of the large Victorian house. Her stomach churned as her gaze flipped between the obviously outdated brochure in her cold hand and the three-story wooden structure to her right in need of a new paint job and some other cosmetic work. If the outside reflected the inside, her vision of reopening the Bancroft Bed-and-Breakfast by the Founder's Day Festival the first weekend in May died a quick and painful death.

Disappointment pooled around her shoulders and matched the dismal early March skies. Puffy gray clouds threatened more snow in the sleepy town of Dynamite Creek in northern Arizona. The bare limbs of the tree standing guard by the long porch running along the front of the house looked more inviting than the empty windows that stared back at her. She should have guessed the house would be as welcoming as the people who once lived inside.

"Yep. This is it. We're here." Delia Wentworth, the receptionist from her late grandmother's attorney's office unbuckled her seat belt and opened the driver's side door. Frigid air blew through the interior, making Abby shiver inside her inadequate jacket and miss the warm Southern California weather. Here wasn't exactly the picture perfect place she'd expected to find as she sat frozen inside the car.

"It's really a great house. It just needs a little TLC," Delia responded enthusiastically before leaving the car.

"A little?" Abby's skepticism showed in her voice. She knew nothing about general construction, but she had eyes, unless something in her brain had gone haywire in the long drive between Los Angeles and Dynamite Creek. Maybe she needed a pair of rose-colored glasses like Delia wore because Abby didn't quite see the old Victorian in the same way.

Pulling her collar around her neck, Abby grabbed her purse, exited the car and walked to where the young woman stood. Abby held up the brochure and compared it with the house. Then she flipped the piece of paper over. The photo credit was from 1987. Figures. Over the years, beautiful and welcoming had morphed into dismal and uninviting. The yellow paint had faded over time and had begun to peel in several places and some of the porch railing sagged. And that was just what she could see.

A gust of wind frosted her legs and whipped a loose strand of hair into her eyes. Abby should have waited until May to collect her inheritance, but the letter from the attorney's office hadn't really given her much choice and she wasn't fool enough to walk away from a place she could finally call home. If she found a way to fit into Dynamite Creek.

Highlanders

I’m glad to be back at Erin’s blog. Not only is she a wonderful person, but I’m in love with her books! She has such a beautiful way with words that sucks me into her worlds instantly.

Hmm…Highlanders. Just saying the word makes me envision muscular, alpha men who are bold and daring. Seductive and tempting. Rugged and roguish.

What makes Highlanders so very. . . enticing? For me its part of the people they were/are. They are one with their land as few are. Their love of Scotland runs deep in their blood as is seen by their bloody and violent history defending it.

Yet it’s also because there is something amazingly appealing about a man in a kilt. Maybe it’s a getting to see those muscular legs or knowing what they are – or aren’t as the case goes – wearing beneath those tartans. J

But I think its because there’s a look a Highlander has that says he’s tough enough and strong enough for whatever comes his way.

There’s nothing I love more than a brawny man in a kilt with a sword ready to defend what is his.

What is it that appeals to you about Highlanders?

I've mentioned that I'll be at the Tucson Festival of Book in a couple of weeks. The Festival has hundreds of authors and expects thousands of readers. There will be booksellers, food vendors, and workshops going on all weekend. I'm so excited!

I love to hear about the heroine of a novel, but I really love ot hear about the hero so I've asked Karen to tell us about Gera Fitzgerald's one true love.

WHY MY HEROINE (AND I!) LOVE MY HERO by Karen Harper, author of THE IRISH PRINCESS

I don’t know about you, but I’m a sucker for dashing sea captains. There’s just something about a man in a boat or ship, especially the commander of one. So I was thrilled to discover that my real life Irish heroine Gera Fitzgerald had a forbidden romance with and later a long marriage to the Lord High Admiral of England during the Tudor era. I’m always looking for historical heroines who have a great love story, and Gera’s hero completely floated my boat.

She first meets Edward Clinton when she is quite young—and on a ship, of course. Here’s how she describes his initial impact on her: He turned and looked at me, his eyes widening in surprise. He smiled, flaunting white teeth in his sun-browned face, a handsome face with a strong nose and blue eyes like the sea and slashes of black eyebrows that seemed to work independently when he so willed it. Compared to the whey-skinned, light-haired Irish, he seemed almost devil dark.

There are two portraits each of Elizabeth (Gera) Fitzgerald and Captain Edward Clinton which remain today, and I’ve included my favorites ones here. The other, more formal one of him can be found by Googling “Edward Fiennes Clinton + portrait.” Gera’s later-in-life portrait can be Googled also, but I must admit I love the way the artist has depicted her on the cover of THE IRISH PRINCESS. I also love my hero for the way he did not desert Gera when she and her Irish family, “the uncrowned kings of Ireland,” were persecuted (even beheaded!) by King Henry VIII. Edward and Gera’s love was forbidden because he worked for the Tudors and her family were Irish rebels, but they definitely stayed in touch over the years despite the fact that they each had arranged marriages. Finally, they were able to wed each other and had quite an amazing, if turbulent marriage, especially when Gera kept getting in trouble with more Tudors, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth of England.

There are both tender and contentious scenes in the novel between Gera and her captain. Tender as when Edward lets Gera steer his ship, then places his hands over hers on the spokes of the wheels. My favorite clash is the scene where he abducts her to save her (she doesn’t see it that way) in the tradition of the best old Errol Flynn, Russell Crowe or Johnny Depp swashbuckling heroes:

“Gera, I pray you’ll someday forgive me for this, but you’ve going to have a little accident and go home with me.”

“What? I—“

It was all I got out before he swirled his cape at me, over me, then put his hand over my mouth. He hefted me into his arms, however hard I kicked and thrashed, and carried me up and over the hill…

“Stop fighting,” he said and squeezed my shoulder.

So calmly spoken. Was he helping me and himself, or the king?

I heard a horse snort. “I’ll loose you as soon as we are away,” he said. He set me across a large saddle, then mounted behind me and spurred the horse away. I was both panicked and, God forgive me, thrilled.

I must admit I was thrilled when my research turned up not only the perfect strong, dynamic heroine but a hero to match her. Along with William Stafford, the man Mary Boleyn chose to marry in my novel THE LAST BOLEYN, Edward Clinton was the easiest real man I’ve ever made into a hero. Ah, to be sailing, sailing, over the bounding main with a man like Captain Clinton!

Why a member of Clan Bell says: "Norway is the new Scotland"!

Before you condemn this Scots/Irish lassie, here's my story:

I've been to Scotland; it's a very beautiful country. Yes, we tasted haggis. Yes, it is disgusting. Yes, it required a pint of Guinness to wash away the taste.  My most memorable Scottish moment was with a handsome, kilt-wearing Loch Ness tour guide:

Me: "I bought a kilt!"

Him: "Is it forrr yoo?"

Me: "Yes..."

Him: "Then it's no' a kilt, it's a skairrt!"

Me: "Okay. I bough' a skairrt!"

Him: "Oh! Nice accent."

Me: "Thanks."

But when I started writing novels in 2006, I wanted to go a different direction from the highly over-crowded and fanciful "kilted warrior" market. Trust me - I obviously understand the appeal of a man in a plaid. Still, I didn't think the world needed another romance about one. There simply aren't enough bookcases.

The key is the man IN the kilt. He needs to be sexy hero material.

So who else is sexy? Vikings! Big, blond, buff, and beautiful, with oceanic eyes. But the Viking era was pretty harsh. And limited. And dirty. So my Norwegian hero's story takes place in the 1800s. And it quickly grew to a trilogy, with the second book pulling my Nicolas Hansen to Norway to candidate for a reclaimed Norse throne!

But, as enamored I became of my Norse men, I wasn't willing to ignore my own heritage, so while my heroes are all members of the fictional Hansen family of Arendal, Norway - in homage to the Bell clan, I have given some of my heroines the name.

In an attempt to schmooze the Powers That Be, I did set my fourth book - a Hansen prequel - in 1354 on the northern coast of Scotland. The hero is a shipwrecked Norseman trying to get home, rescued by a spunky red-haired healer. This story tells of the re-establishment of the Hansen family following the cataclysmic Black Death.

Loving the Norseman is scheduled for a Fall 2011 release, as is the sequel, Loving the Knight. There, my heroine takes the Bell name as she steps into the role of Lady of the estate and raises the plague-orphaned Bell heir on the Scots/English border in 1355. The hero is a Scottish knight from whom she is keeping her true "English/bastard/servant" identity a secret.

Trust me - there is a Hansen in that story as well! I must remain true to my brand. Because Norway is the new Scotland!

I've been getting notes from readers asking about my books and whether they need to be read in order. I thought I should answer here in case others were wondering.

Q: Is your latest series called the Haunting Series or The Mists of Ireland?
A: The answer is both, sort of. :) A reviewer coined it The Haunting Series after the first book (Haunting Beauty) and the name seemed to stick. Recently, my publisher has decided that the series is more aptly described by a different name: THE MISTS OF IRELAND. So, if you're ordering books online or see the books in the store and you are confused and thinking maybe it's a different series, be confused no more. :) Haunting Series and Mists of Ireland are one and the same series.

Q: Should your Mists of Ireland series be read in order of publication or are the books stand alone?
A: Both. Ha! Honestly, I am one of those readers that always reads books in order, but I know that not all readers come to a series that way. I have written each book to stand alone and it is my hope that a new reader can start anywhere in the series and enjoy the story. However, it wouldn't be a series if there wasn't an over-arching theme linking them together and the stories are connected.

Q: What is the order of publication of your books?
A: My Mists of Ireland series was published in this order:

Haunting Beauty, August 2009

Haunting Warrior, May 2010

Haunting Desire, April 2011

Haunting Embrace, October 2011

Q: Will there be other Mists of Ireland books following Haunting Embrace?

A: I have several stories in mind that involved characters from the Mists of Ireland series, however I have not yet worked them out and presented them to my publisher. New stories, however, will branch away from the four Haunting books and bring in new themes and I expect to bring some closure to the ongoing theme with Haunting Embrace.

Q: You also have books published as Erin Grady. Why the two names?

A: The name change had to do with my publishers opinion that the Mists of Ireland series was different from my other books and should have a new pen name. This is very common in publishing. I believe that while my Erin Grady books are not part of a series, they exhibit the same story telling voice that my Erin Quinn books do. If you've enjoyed my Quinn books, I think you'll like my Grady books.

Q: Will your older titles be rereleased?

A: As soon as I finish Haunting Embrace, I plan to release Echoes and Whispers as eBooks. You will also be able to order them in print at that time.

Recipe for Building the World of Sea Forest

Take a dash of Tarzan, who lives within the canopy of the jungle.

Reserve the land, adding heaping amounts of water to cover the world, so that all life is forced to exist and survive within the ocean trees.

Sprinkle in a touch of Venice, with waterways instead of roads.

Cover it with thirteen moons, so that the tidal pulls cause different directional currents within the waterways of the trees.

Add a touch of magic to help the colonists survive on this hostile planet, in the form of zabbaroot, which only some humans can tolerate. But if they can, it allows them to See, Push, and Change elements at the molecular level.

Fold in a gorgeous aristocracy who are genetically inclined to tolerate the zabbaroot--and use it to maintain power in the world.

Mix in a dash of a wild genetic streak, that allows an occasional peasant or two to use zabbaroot, to an extent surpassing even the royals of the planet.

Blend in natives to the planet, with their own goals and ideals, including a little monk-fish named Jaja who is comical and yet has a deeper purpose toward mankind.

Heat it up to smoking hot when Mahri, a swamp-dweller and smuggler of the zabbaroot, kidnaps Korl, the crown prince of Sea Forest.

Serve with a drizzle of chocolate. There’s nothing better than romance and chocolate…okay, maybe a few things, but not many. ;}

Lordy, the last few months have been insane. I usually feel like I'm on a dead run, but lately it's been more like a flat out run-for-my-life!!!! After a big of burn and churn, HAUNTING DESIRE is finally in the can. The next time I see it will be for a final proofing. I'm really excited about this one hitting the shelves on April 4, 2011, even though--or especially because--it has consumed so much of my life.

For those of you who have asked, my friend and sister author Tina Gerow is doing much better and we're all hoping for a full recovery! It will be a long, arduous (and no doubt expensive) journey back to good health, but thanks to all who have already opened their hearts and wallets to Tina. If you find you have an extra dollar or two, please think of giving this season. You can find more informtion here.

And then there are the holidays! I'm trying to keep my spirit energized for the approaching weeks. As I look around, I can't help but see just how truly blessed I am. I have my health, my family, and the opportunity to tell my stories. I am so fortunate.

It happened on a damp April day, 1819, in the Missouri Territory.

When I first met Nicolas Reidar Hansen, I was struck by his size: six-four and two-fifty of solid muscle. Then he looked at me and I saw his beauty. Classic Nordic features, long hair the color of sunlit straw, and intense navy blue eyes. When he spoke, it felt like thunder on a bright autumn day.
But something was missing. Life. I soon realized that the death of his wife, six years earlier, had effectively killed him as well. Though well-educated and world-traveled, Nicolas was still a romantic at heart. He believed his one and only chance at true love died with her.

CHAPTER ONE

The dogs wouldn’t come back. They yowled and yipped and danced around a muddy heap of fabric lumped beside the receding rain-swollen creek.

“Can’t you control those mutts, Rick?” Nicolas Hansen growled. Irritated, he reined Rusten toward the hounds and wondered which particular Cheltenham resident upstream had seen fit to discard their curtains into his creek. But when he got close, his gut twisted.

The heap had hair. Long, black, tangled hair.

Nicolas threw himself from the gelding. “Rick! Get over here!”

He knelt beside the crumpled and filthy form. His knees sunk into the chilled creekside mud and the roar of the tumbling water almost drowned the roar of his pulse. He stretched his hand over the still figure and hesitated, hoping for some sign of life. There was none. He gently turned the body toward him.

She exhaled a faint moan.

“It’s a woman, Rick!” Nicolas called over his shoulder. “And she’s alive!”

His gaze skimmed the woman’s mud-smeared face. Dark brows slanted from a bruised temple. Their arches flanked a straight nose with a nasty bump. Her lips were blue and the lower one was split and bleeding. That was a good sign. It meant her heart was beating.

“Å min Gud…” Nicolas moaned. He yanked his hunting dirk from its sheath and held it over the woman’s skirt.

He hesitated again, weighing the ramifications to himself—and her—if he cut away her clothing. But he knew he couldn’t balance her on his horse anchored as she was by yards of mud-saturated wool. In Nicolas’s personal economy, saving her life far outweighed saving their reputations.

If he wasn’t too late already.

Rickard’s voice spilled over his shoulder, “Wrap her in this.” A blanket nudged his arm.

Nicolas nodded his acknowledgement. He severed the full skirt from her bodice in a few quick strokes. He left her chemise intact and his gaze didn’t linger on her bruised and bare legs. He rolled her into the blanket, stood with her cradled in his arms, and faced Rickard.

“Hand her up to me,” he said as he transferred the woman into his best friend’s sturdy grasp. Rickard accepted the burden without pause.

Nicolas mounted his tall gelding and leaned down to gather the limp bundle. He shifted a bit until he felt both he and the woman were secure on Rusten’s back. “Ride ahead, will you? Tell Addie what’s coming.”

Rickard nodded and turned to his own mount. “Do you know her?”

Nicolas frowned. “No. Do you?”

Rickard prodded his stallion closer and leaned over the unconscious woman. “I don’t think so. Hard to tell with all the mud and the bruising, though.”

“Hm.” Nicolas jerked his chin at Rickard. “Go on, then.”

Rickard kicked his horse to an easy canter, waved over his shoulder, and he was gone.

Nicolas followed at a steady walk, afraid to jar his fragile passenger by hurrying the huge gelding. He guided Rusten with his knees while he considered her pale, muddy face.

Lying ten miles southwest of St. Louis, Cheltenham was a small township. Nicolas had lived here his entire life—save for four university years and the year he was obliged to stay in Norway. He believed he knew all of its residents, so he was fairly certain he had never seen this woman before.

And that made her appearance even more puzzling. Where had she come from? Where was she headed? And how did she end up in the creek to begin with? Was she the victim of an accident? Or was something more sinister afoot?

“I suppose if you awaken, you’ll explain yourself,” he mumbled and shifted her position a little. Her eyelids fluttered and she gave a tiny whimper. But she lay as limp as a drowned cat in his arms.

When he reached the manor, his aging housekeeper stood in the doorway beside Rickard, craning her neck and worrying her apron. His friend stepped forward, accepted the feminine bundle once again, and held her while Nicolas dismounted.

“Thanks, Rick,” Nicolas said as he took the woman and hugged her securely against his chest. He faced Addie. “We’ll put her in the room at the end of the hall.”

She nodded and followed him into the house. “Poor thing,” she cooed.

Nicolas topped the stairs without noticeable effort and headed toward the uninhabited room, the furthest one from his. After all, he had no interest in any sort of entanglement and fully expected to return this unexpected and unwanted female to whomever she belonged as soon as she regained consciousness. Once in the room, he laid his mysterious charge on the bed and gave her over to Addie’s competent care.

“Rick?” he called down the staircase.

“I’m here, Nick.” Rickard stepped out of Nicolas’s study and gulped a glass of amber liquid.

Nicolas snorted and started down the steps. “Let’s get back to hunting, eh? Before you finish off my best brandy!”

Rickard laughed and set down the empty glass. “You’ve got more stashed in here than even I could finish and you know it!”

Nicolas reached him, grinned and slapped his shoulder. “Come on, then. If you can manage those dogs, I’ve a taste for pheasant for supper tonight!”

I haven't given anything away on the blog for awhile--life has been so busy I've just lost track of time. But I think, in honor of November, I should give away a book.

Not much to say of late

My blogging has been decidedly flat of late, but that's because my life has been decidedly stretched. I've still found the time to read some great books written by friends of mine. It's always a pleasure to support a local author, so why don't I shout out about them now?

In the order I read them:

FIRELORD'S LOVER, by Kathryne Kennedy. I actually read this one some time back and it was just fabulous. Seriously, if you haven't read Kathryne Kennedy, you're missing out. She is so talented and imaginative that you'll be swept away completely!

TOUCHED BY AN ALIEN, by Gini Koch. In real life this author is a lot of fun. In fiction, she's even funner. :) Gini writes an action packed, zany adventure with great characters. If you're not a sci-fi fan and are turned off by the cover, don't be. There's some depth in this story that is unique and interesting and lots of laughs.

PLAY FLING, by Amber Scott. Ms. Scott has penned and emotional tale with a lot of hot spice and meddling fun. This romance between an older woman and a younger man goes deeper than the parts and shows all the insecurities and passions that a new relationship--ANY relationship has, but especially one where there are obstacles to surmount. This is the first in a series and a fun read.

A WOMAN OF CHOICE, by Kris Tualla. Kris will actually be stopping by the blog in a couple of weeks to talk about her books. In this one, she takes a slice of American history and gives it a new spin by putting her Norwegian hero in Missouri. She weaves a great tale with romance, deceit, mystery and passion in her debut novel and she does it with a rich historical voice.

SHADOW FALL, by Erin Kellison. Erin's debut novel grabs you from the first chapter and takes you through a harrowing story of a world invaded by soul sucking demons. With a wonderful voice and moving characters, Erin delivers a great tale that continues in a series that certainly going to please. An intriguing and fresh premise makes this all the better.

SEDUCING THE SUCCUBUS, by Cassie Ryan. You want hot? Cassie delivers. In this great action packed novel, you get it all. Angels and Demons--and told in a fresh and innovative way. Succubi and incubi, humans, and Djin, Oh My! Cassie mixes them all up and gives you a passionate tale about the power of love and the wonders of good hot lovin'. This is a first book in a series that promises to be a lot of fun!

I'm on the final weeks until book 4 in the Haunting Series is due and I'm finding the final stretch such a challenge. I really want this book to be the best and I'm letting my worries get in the way of my creativity. I need some serious focus and to just shut the world out.

I'm really excited about having Cassie Ryan on my blog today! Not only is she one of the nicest people you'll ever want to meet, Cassie is über talented. Everyone is always talking about how much they love “tortured characters” in books. Characters who have to overcome some or even a lot of past baggage as they move through the story—and in the case of the villains—sometimes they never get past it or even try. But those inherently flawed characters seem to fascinate readers and writers alike.

I must admit, I love tortured characters as well. As a writer, their scars from the past help lend motivation to their current actions. And I love watching their journey as the other characters end up pushing their buttons and making them confront that tortured past. Yes, just like most writers—I am kind of evil to my characters

But is there a point where a character is TOO tortured?

I’ve read books where I have to stop reading because the pain of the characters is just too much for me as a reader to bear. And many times when I’m THAT uncomfortable I never end up picking the book back up. Granted, it could be that a particular character touched on some of my own personal baggage, but many times it’s also because I’m pretty empathic when it comes to “feeling” what others are—including characters in books and movies. I’m not talking about a good gory fight scene or a good knock down drag out fight now and then when the story warrants, but when the character is just wrenched and wrung out through the entire book without a break—I think I just end up mentally exhausted! I just don’t enjoy reading books where the poor characters are tortured just for the sake of being tortured. You can imagine from that why I don’t do horror movies. *shudder*

So for that reason, I’m very careful when I “torture” my characters. I want to push their buttons. I want the other characters to make them question their long-held beliefs and even their learned reactions to things. I want bad things to happen to them—but only so they can grow and find closure if not peace by the end of the story.

In Seducing the Succubus, Jezebeth is a succubi who has been around since Adam and Eve were kicked out of the Garden of Eden. She has to have sexual energy to survive. But because of what she has to do to survive, and the fact that the succubi are the read-headed step children of the supernatural world, she’s been subjected to the poor opinion and derision of others for millennia. So when she meets Noah, a horror writer who got himself into trouble when he accidentally summoned Lilith while doing writing research, Jezebeth has a chip on her shoulder already. So when Noah makes his opinion plain about what she has to do to survive—she reacts in a predictably prickly manner.

Over the course of the story, they have to grow past both their prejudices and their past baggage in order to see eye to eye.

It’s that journey that fascinates me and keeps me coming back to both write and read more books :)

The sound of her amusement came out weaker than she’d like, but the fact that she still had enough energy to laugh gave her the freedom to wait and choose who she took sustenance from.

Noah had already made his disgust of her and her survival needs very clear back in the parking lot≤even though she could smell the musky scent of his arousal that wafted through the cab of the truck. Her skin ached with longing in response to the scent. It was too bad he felt that way because the glowing aura of nearly white energy that surrounded him like a pulsing mist looked as if it could totally heal her even with minimal contact like a deep kiss.

He was attracted, but also repulsed.

Interesting, but definitely irrelevant.

Jez had never been ashamed of what she was and what she had to do to survive. That would just be a waste of time since there was nothing she could do to change it. But for some reason, Noah’s distaste as he’d looked at the two men lying in the truck had stung. He’d risked his life to help her, and for that she found she wasn’t willing to broach the subject of taking Noah’s energy unless she was near death and didn’t have any other choice.

She was used to seeing men only as a means to an end≤survival. For the most part they were predictable, easy to manipulate and totally uninteresting. But so far Noah was a puzzle that intrigued her.

She mentally shrugged and concentrated on conserving her energy for the task ahead.

“What’s so funny?”

Even in the near darkness, she could make out his small scowl of confusion.

“You said the truck stop is a Succubus Smorgasbord if I’m willing. There’s no ‘willing’ to it. I’ll take whatever we can find at this point.” Her words were still weak, but she was glad to hear an underlying thread of strength that hadn’t been there before. Pure stubbornness might help her hold out long enough to find more energy.

When the next exit loomed, Noah took it and drove toward the large truck stop that sat on the side of the freeway--a halfway point between nowhere and nothing.

Jez tipped down the visor and checked her appearance in the tiny mirror. Dark circles rode under her hazel eyes, which looked too big for her pale face. She looked like she’d had a hard night of partying and hadn’t recovered yet.

A large sigh escaped. She’d been in worse forms and still found those willing to offer her their sustenance. She combed her fingers through her hair and used most of the rest of her energy to remove the blood from her arm and clothes until she slumped back against the seat, wishing she could just close her eyes and sleep.

Noah pulled around to the back parking lot and parked among the large semitrucks scattered in the extra-long parking spaces. He turned off the ignition and pulled out the keys before glancing toward Jezebeth. “So, how should we do this?”

“We?” She gave him her best sardonic smile. “You’ve already made it quite clear how you see my need for energy.” Her words came out more cutting than she’d intended, but she was surprised when Noah winced. But when she glanced again, his expression was haughty and unforgiving, convincing her she’d only imagined it.

“Yes, we. I promised I’d take care of you and get you back to Lilith safe and sound. You’re nearly out of energy, so the least I can do is help you . . . find some.”

Jez huffed out a breath of sarcastic amusement. “Don’t go all noble on me. I’m sure the night of hot sex with Lilith was well worth everything you’ll have to go through to pay for it.” She reached for the door handle. That was usually Lilith’s side of the equation, and got the succubus queen whatever she wanted in return.

“I didn’t have a night of hot sex with Lilith.” Noah’s words were defensive and low.

Jez popped open the door and glanced back at him. “Don’t worry, when Lilith gives her word or makes a deal, she keeps it. You’ll get your night when this is done.”

Noah frowned as he studied her. “Why would I want to be just another fuck among billions? This is my payment for not spending the night with Lilith.”

Jez frowned trying to understand the meaning behind his cryptic words. She was tempted to ask him for clarification, but she was already light-headed and needed to find energy fast. Besides, the distaste in his voice was obvious, and his words echoed through Jez’s mind like an accusation.

Why would I want to be just another fuck among billions?

She winced as anger burned through her. Who the hell was this guy to judge her and her kind? He was a mere human, and while his aura was distractingly clean and white, she was sure he hadn’t taken any vows of celibacy or morality. “Then you’ll be relieved to know that I’m a bit more discerning than my mistress. You’ll never get any type of offer from me.”

Noah snapped his mouth shut as if she’d surprised him, and she enjoyed a small surge of satisfaction as she slid out of the truck and closed the door behind her.

The cold night air hit her from all sides, stealing her breath and slowly leaching her low reserves of energy. She leaned heavily against the truck as she gathered her strength for the walk into the truck stop.

Noah cursed as he jogged around to her side. She thought she caught the words “stubborn fricking woman” within his mumbles as he stopped in front of her. “Let me help you get inside. You’re still weak.” He took her arm in his and pulled her close against his side.

His body was warm and firm, the muscles of his torso flexing against her as he moved.

She stiffened and pulled away from him. “I’m fine. It’s time for me to go look for one billion and one, so if you’ll excuse me.”

Noah recoiled as if she’d slapped him, an expression of surprise flashing across his features.

“Miss? Do you need any help?”

Jez turned to find a tall, lanky man in his mid-forties wearing a thick flannel shirt, jeans, and boots approaching them, his keys jangled in his right hand. He had dark hair, piercing blue eyes, and a kind expression. But even more important, the hazy mist surrounding him was thick enough to call to her like a dark promise, and yet dark enough to show her that he might not take too much convincing to give her the sustenance she needed right here in the parking lot.

She didn’t look back at Noah, but instead willed her legs to hold her weight as she walked carefully forward toward the newcomer. “Actually, I could really use some help, if you don’t mind.” Jezebeth smiled up at him. “Maybe a ride?” She let her meaning show clearly in her gaze as it traveled down his body to center on the growing bulge just behind the fly of his jeans.

“Jezebeth . . .” Noah’s voice was a low warning behind her, and she ignored it, hoping he took the hint and shut up.

The man’s gaze flicked past her to Noah, and she could sense his primal protective instincts kicking into high gear. Humans were very territorial--especially about women. “Don’t worry about him,” she soothed the newcomer. “He just can’t accept that I’m not interested.”

Jezebeth could’ve sworn she felt a blast of cold air coming from Noah’s direction--an outward sign that her mark had hit home. But she knew that was only her own fancy at work. After all, he was only human.

The man held Noah’s angry gaze for a long moment before he said, “Of course, darlin’. My truck is right this way.”

“Actually, the lady is just fine.” Noah stepped forward placing his body between Jezebeth and the newcomer, wrapping a possessive arm around her waist.

Her mind sent a signal to her body to object and pull away, but her body refused to respond. You've heard me say it before, but it's worth repeating. One of the things I like best about being a writer is the people. No, I'm not talking about the people in my head--although I do love them too. It's the people I get to meet on this crazy journey. Amber Scott is definitely one of my favorites. Not only is she just a genuinely nice person, she has a great sense of humor and is always warm and encouraging (even when we run into each other at the library, sans makeup and--in my case--with a coffee stained shirt.)

Okay, so on to the interview.

Erin: When did you first know you wanted to be a writer?

Amber: I remember telling my mom I'd be a writer when I grew up at around the age of four. She nodded, seemed very impressed and asked me what I would write. Children's books? Poetry? I didn't know the answer until my first historical romance novel, A Gentle Feuding, and I fell in love with love. I've lived in "romance novel zone", a direct quote from my sisters, ever since. But I love my rose colored glasses and shall never give them back.

Erin: You have a busy life with small children, how do you juggle it all?

Amber: Thank Heaven for cartoons! No. Really. After my daughter, my second, was born and my first stopped napping, I had a major struggle finding writing time. I'd grown spoiled by my first's clockwork like naptimes, an hour to two, every day, same time, same place. My husband's long work hours didn't help. I had two choices: Lose my marbles or sneak in some writing. So, I learned how to pound out a paragraph here, a paragraph there. I wrote Play Fling with each one hanging from a leg, typing while standing at my breakfast bar. Things are far more predictable now. My little ones have learned to share me, as long as they come first and get full attention in between. Ten minutes here, twenty there, child wrapped around me like a mink stole, it all adds up.

Erin: If you could write whatever you want and know it would be an instant bestseller, what would it be?

Amber: Whatever the latest sub-genre my muse has taken me to! I've finally learned to have faith and stop fighting Milla, the goth chick who lights my brain up with each new tale. She shall have her way, no matter how much I think of shoulds when it comes to what the right next story is. Whether it's an erotica, a paranormal or a romantic comedy, I'd love every one to fly off the shelves and into the hearts of millions of readers. Knowing I have given someone the same escape I live for gives me immeasurable joy.

Erin: Tell us about your latest release and what YOU love about it?

Amber: In Play Fling, playing cupid isn't a reward; it's Millie's punishment. If she doesn't find repressed, divorcee, Brooke, true love in the next thirty days, Millie'll lose the one thing in this life sentence worth fighting for, her partner. Just two problems: First, Millie sucks at matchmaking. Second, too young, too hot, Elliott keeps getting in Millie's way. What I love most is the strong reaction Millie gets from readers. She's a bit of the antihero who will have a tough run of it over the course of the series, but will ultimately find her own happily ever after. She makes me laugh out loud and I've had to talk her out of a couple seriously sticky choices. What I miss most, though, is spending all that time with my, er, Brooke's deliciously smart but sexy, Elliott. Thankfully, I'll more heartthrobs on the horizon.

Erin: Can you give us an excerpt?

Excerpt from PLAY FLING:

“Don’t go,” he said.

Brooke turned, ready to cut him with an icy remark. She fell short, her lips parted. He’d taken his glasses off. Her breath caught, seeing his undisguised attraction. The word smoldering came to mind. She’d never felt a man look at her the way he was looking at her.

He came around the desk. He shut the door. Locked it.

Her heart thumped up her throat.

“I think I’ve made a mistake,” Brooke said, amazed her voice didn’t crack. “I think I have to go.”

“Don’t go,” he said again, stepping close.

His words enveloped her. Had she thought his glasses made him irresistible? She’d been wrong. His lashes set off depths so blue, so intense, they might penetrate her soul.

Slowly, he reached up, pushed a lock of hair from her face. His finger ran along her cheek, to her lobe, down her neck and up to her chin. With gentle pressure, he tipped her chin up. Brooke’s hands shook. Her mouth watered. Her mind searched for words and found two: don’t go.

How could she?

His gaze captivated hers. He lowered his head. She closed her eyes. The tremble in her hands spread up her arms, down her legs. Yes. God, yes. Let him kiss her. Let her taste his lips on hers, his breath, his mouth.

“Stay,” he whispered against her lips.

She failed to shake her head, no, she wouldn’t go. He began at her chin, a graze, and in slow succession, breathed and kissed and wet her skin. Kisses. Tantalizing, sensual, tickling. Around her mouth, teasing her. Away again, torture.

Her knees turned to water. She almost whimpered. His mouth found her hungry lips.

Brooke gasped. His hands raked into her hair. He kissed her lower lip, moved to the side, never quite meeting her fully. Brooke moaned, awash with a full body shiver. Musk and sandalwood intoxicated her senses. Mint, sweet on her tongue. She swayed her weight toward his body. He slid his hand over her lower back, steadying her.

Her lips parted, begging entry. He took it. His tongue carefully delved, explored as her lips, suckled and pressed. Brooke returned each caress, mindless of all but each sensation coming over her mouth, washing her body.

Her hands rose to his chest. His roamed over her back, ever lower, inch-by-inch to her hips. He broke the kiss and pulled away.

Brooke opened her eyes. She could hardly think.

He swallowed. “I want you.”

A small ache jolted to life between her legs. She wanted him, too. Bad. Shamelessly. The realization sent her a step back. She couldn’t.

Elliott’s hands tugged at her hips. He shook his head. “I’ll stop. I’m sorry. But, please, don’t go. Not like this.”

The ramifications of what she’d just done, of what she allowed him to do, of where they were and who he was, rammed through her mind, penetrating her haze.

Brooke put a hand to her forehead. “I can’t do this.”

“No,” Elliott said. “Don’t say that. Just close your eyes. I promise. I won’t ask anything of you.” He moved closer, his eyes charming the fear snaking through her. “Stay.”

He leaned in and his scent, his heat, teased her senses. He made her thirst for more. One more taste. A small interior voice urged her to try it. What harm could a little bit more really cause? When had a man ever made her knees go weak? She deserved weak knees. Wet, hot kisses.

She needed them.

Brooke let him tug her closer. She shut her eyes. Elliott’s mouth met hers, sweet at first, then urgent, and pleading. Her hands dug into his clothes, her hips sought his. He felt so good. So hard, muscular. So good.

Her mind designed the flesh beneath her hands as she traced his contours. Not enough. She needed skin. She tugged at the hem of his shirt. Elliott groaned.

“God,” he whispered. His tongue licked magic over her collarbone. His hands cradled her waist, her neck. “You taste so good.”

Brooke whimpered. Her nipples peaked, aching for touch. He grabbed her by the hips and lifted her. She wrapped her legs around him as he positioned their bodies onto a nest of papers. Her need thrummed harder. Moisture sprang between her thighs.

Elliott cupped her face. His body stilled above hers, inches from answering what her limbs begged for. His touch. “We have to stop,” he said.

Heaviness gathered back into her chest. “Stop?”

Elliott nodded. Emotion shone in his eyes. “I want you. Make no mistake about that.”

Then why stop? She couldn’t ask, though. She wouldn’t make more of a fool of herself over him. Not when she knew how rash she was being even coming to this office, let alone clawing his body like a sex kitten.

Her surroundings slipped back into focus. Elliott helped her to her feet. She ignored how wobbly her legs were. Had she been ready to give herself to him right there on Shope’s desk?

She should be thanking him, really. Good sturdy common sense had plainly exited her brain. If not for his clear head, they might be naked, limbs entangled for anyone to walk in on. No, wait, he had locked the door.

Still. “I should go.”

He took her hand, kissed it. “When can I see you?”

The weight in her chest lifted. “I don’t think you can. I’m not sure we should be doing this.”

He cocked his head. “Yes you are.”

She opened her mouth to protest. He brought her wrist to his lips and licked the sensitive flesh there, effectively shutting her up. She didn’t know what she could have said. An unstoppable prayer formed inside of her. Please, it said. Him, this, yes. Please. His lips caressed her skin, his fingers entwined hers.

Where's Erin?

I've been a bit absent of late--not physically but definitely bloggerly. :) I'm down to the final weeks of wrapping up the new book and that is consuming most of my time. If you entered my pick a title contest and are wondering....haven't decided on the title yet. Why? Well, I know as soon as I start talking about the new book to my editor, I'm going to need to give her some things (like the text that goes on the back of the book and other stuff) and I'm making such great forward progress on the writing that I don't want to stop and switch gears. Shrinking dresses and other tales from the edge

So I dreamed last night that a friend asked me to come over and talk to her book group. I love doing that so I, of course, said yes. I expected about 5 people but when I got there, I found about 100 in this hidden auditorium at the back of her house--complete with pull out bleachers. I was so surprised when I arrived that I talked about writing and the life of a writer, but I neglected to mention who I was or even mumble the titles of my books. The million bookmarks I haul from place to place never came out. AND I thanked them all at the end of the talk and left without signing books. As I exited I heard a few mumbling, "who was she again?"

The dream then morphed into me stumbling around on the ASU campus in the incredible shrinking dress--each step I took made me sweat more and my dress got smaller until I was trying to keep it from tangling in the elastic of my underwear. I won't go into details, but needless to say, I shouldn't have been wearing the dress when it was the right size. Shrunken was wrong on too many levels.

Thank the powers that be, I woke up before it disappeared altogether.

I love it when Renee Bernard has a new book out because that means I get to host her here on my blog. :) Renee is one of those people that you meet once and feel like you've know forever. In fact, we've only met once, but I knew I wanted to be friends immediately (poor Renee didn't have a chance of escaping me, ha ha. I hope, at least, that I'm her favorite Stalker :-). You'll be hard put to meet a warmer, more generous person. I think that generosity and warmth is found in Renee's characters too. Her heroes may be tortured, but they are never petty or cruel. And let me tell you, they are NEVER cold. On the contrary, they are smoking hot!

Renee...take it away!

Out of the mouths of babes…isn’t that the saying? Well, I often find that a character’s light-hearted remarks can seal their fate and inspire their own delicious fall. When the Jaded came to life and I was writing the first book in the series, “Revenge Wears Rubies”, Ashe Blackwell made a joke about needing a chaperone and I knew that “Seduction Wears Sapphires” was going to be a much more light-hearted ride thanks to my wonderful hero.

Rogues and bad boys are singularly suited to getting attention in romances, but I wanted Ashe to be more than a shallow playboy. If he lives his life to excess, there are reasons for his choices and if a woman is going to rein him in, she couldn’t just be the usual innocent thrown in his path. Oh, no! When a man lives his life hearing the word “Yes”, it had to be a woman who had no qualms about telling him “No!” And where an English miss might be swayed, I was sure that an American woman with a practical streak a mile wide wasn’t going to easily be impressed with a handsome man in evening clothes.

Ashe! I think he’s one of my favorites, if only because he hides very little and for all his bravado, I consider him one of the more vulnerable of the Jaded when it comes to matters of the heart. He is the one man amidst them who lost his first love not by a personal betrayal or misstep, but through sheer chance and tragedy. It was a doomed relationship, but I don’t think Ashe ever saw it that way and if the rebellion hadn’t intervened, he might be fighting for her still. So I truly hope that my readers will fall in love with him, too. Not just for the rogue in him, but for the true hero he tries to be in honoring his grandfather’s wishes and committing completely to whatever he’s pursuing (even when it’s not good for him…)

As for the backdrop, the Victorian era was long and varied in its character. I love it because it is such a rich tapestry to work against. For me, the specific time period of these particular books is one of great change (1859-60); so for now, Queen Victoria still has the love of her life in Prince Albert, America is on the brink of their Civil War and nothing is certain. The Jaded met in the dungeons of a raj in India during the Sepoy Rebellion and have their fair share of scars and horror stories to tell, but they also escaped with secret fortunes in their pockets and hidden enemies on their heels. They say you can never go home again, but for the gentlemen of the Jaded, it’s never that simple.

After all…home is where the heart is, right?

So, here’s the burning question of the day. I definitely broke some rules and stretched reality a bit for the sake of a good read by throwing a female chaperone into Ashe’s path. When I research, I stay as true as I can, but ultimately, it’s fiction, this romance game ;--) so I’m not always a slave to the details. How do you feel about historical romance? Is it better to keep all the grit and grime intact, or can an author blur the lines without risking life and limb? What are your favorite rule-breakers or rule-keepers when it comes to historical romance?

She laughed again, and the magic of it wasn’t lessened in its new familiarity. Ashe liked this lighter and merrier version of the terrier. This Miss Townsend was all feminine sweetness and corruptible curves, without the glowering looks and prim little sniffs of disapproval. This Miss Townsend had an appeal that transcended his opinions about pushy American women and chaperones in general.

But this Miss Townsend was just as forbidden to him as any other woman, and Ashe bit the inside of his cheek hard enough to sting and remind him that while she had the luxury of dreams, his feet needed to stay firmly planted in the waking world.

“Here we are,” he stopped at her door, opening the latch for her and glancing inside to note the lack of light. “Let me see if we can’t light a candle and get you settled,” he said, guiding her just inside the doorway.

She put her head on his shoulder and he could feel her nod in acquiescence. She was clinging to him innocently enough, but the sensation of her pert breasts pressing against his arm and side through the thin silk of his shirt was pure torment. He tried to recall the room’s arrangement by memory, but he’d never bothered much with the guest rooms.

Ashe instinctively acted to protect the terrier’s shins and avert a bad ending to their adventure. “Wait, here, miss, and I’ll make sure everything is as it should be.” He gently guided her hand to the door frame, anchoring her safely so that he could make his explorations.

“You’re so kind to me,” she sighed.

Kind. I’m the devil in the dark, and she thinks I’m kind.

He strode toward what he thought was a best guess of the direction for her bed and side table and instead was rewarded with a bruising blow across his shins from one of her traveling trunks. Ashe bit down hard to swallow a string of curses from the throbbing pain, before trying another direction and finding success. With a hand on the bed curtains, he traced the edge of the mattress and found what he was looking for.

The glow from the single taper was more than enough to illuminate the waiting figure in the doorway, and Ashe forgot about his bruised shins at the vision she presented. Once again her thin cotton gown did nothing more than accent everything her dowdy fashions struggled to hide from view.

The heat in his blood reignited and Ashe smiled, wondering if his grandfather had any idea of the hellfire he’d poured on his grandson’s head. Sacred oaths and familial duties aside, his chaperone was proving to be an unexpected problem.

“Must I go to bed now?” she asked, and Ashe’s cock instantly became painfully hard, its swollen head pressing against the waist of his pants and when he risked a glance downward he could see it, one pearl of moisture beading from its tip.

He closed his eyes and tried to banish the demon that snaked through his body, its power emanating from the raw hunger between his thighs. “Yes,” he managed to grind out, roughly pulling the covers aside. “In, Miss Townsend.”

“Won’t you be showing me more of London?” She walked toward him, her voice giving no hint of an intimate double meaning to her words, no trace of an illicit invitation—but her nightgown had fallen even further down her shoulder revealing the top of a creamy orb, an invitation in itself.

Oh, the things I could show you, Miss Townsend.

“Not tonight.” He tugged at the covers again, his hands itching to see just how much of a pull it would take on the ribbon of her gown to allow it to fall to the floor. He forced himself to look away from the frayed strip of narrow satin so tantalizing within his reach. “Time to rest and tomorrow…we’ll see about you beginning your adventures in London.”

She sighed, lifting the hem of her nightgown with the innocence of a child to allow her to climb unencumbered up into the bed and giving Ashe a delicious peek at her legs in the process. “I’ve never had an adventure before!”

It was all he could do not to grab one of her ankles and drag her over to the side of the bed and ravish her without apologies. Instead, he stiffly threw the covers over her and took a firm step back. “Stay. In. Bed.”

“As you wish,” she smiled sweetly, pressing back into the pillows, her blonde curls fanning out to frame her face. Her eyes looked at him, without seeing him, and Ashe finally accepted that retreat was his only option.

He took the taper with him, hoping to avoid another stumble on his way out. He’d nearly made it to the door when she called out softly, “I can hardly wait until tomorrow.”

He shut the door behind him and blew out the candle.

God, give me strength.

Life is moving at warp speed, but I've come to expect that. I've had to slow down my extra curricular reading--my "just for me" reading, that is. I've got too much other stuff going on.....Like re-reading Haunting Desire as I write Haunting Destiny. There are so many elements to my Haunting Series, so many pieces that I fit in the puzzle. I want to be sure that I include them all and I don't end up with a gaping hole anywhere.

I'm really excited about Tiarnan's story and I hope you'll like it too. What's difficult is ending one story and starting another. I always feel like it should be brilliant and perfect out of the gate and it takes me forever to come around to the fact that rarely is anything brilliant in first draft. GRRRRR.

Thanks to everyone for the book recommendations. As soon as I get the first draft of the fourth book finished, I'll be diving in. And if you were part of the title contest--still haven't selected. I've been waiting until I had a few things completed before I send the suggestions to my editor. I wanted to give her the cover copy and the first chapter at the same time AND I wanted to be through this final read of Haunting Desire. So, look for the winner announcement in the next few weeks.

By the way, in case you haven't heard....Haunting Desire will be out in April 2011. (It was advertised before as March, but there was a scheduling conflict so April it is. My birthday is in April and I'm thinking it will be a lucky year for me. (birthday is 11, year 11).

Hi there. I love to talk about books. If you read this blog, you probably already know that. I don't mean I just like to talk about MY books, but all books. There's not a genre I haven't read (although political memoirs, business strategies and financial outlooks tend to leave me...well, asleep). I also go through binges where I am addicted to a certain genre. Last year I couldn't get enough Regency romance, the year before I was loving straight paranormal (as opposed to crooked paranormal, ha ha). This year I'm hooked on Urban Fantasy. I've devoured a few series since I started, but I'm still Jonesin' for more. Recommendations are always welcome.

Sometimes being a writer is fun....and others it's a blast

One of the best things that has happened to me since I became a writer is meeting new people. I have made so many great friends--both virtual and in person--through the stories I tell and my involvement with other readers and writers. I feel very blessed by my good fortune.

One group of ladies I have come to know are the Red Hat Ladies in East Valley, aka the Foxy Dahlings. They have a book club and have invited me to speak to them several times. I tell you, I have more fun at these meetings! This month I went to talk about HAUNTING WARRIOR, the latest release in my Haunting Series.

They ladies surprised me by making me an honorary member of the club. As the book worm who never got picked for the team, this was a highlight for me. :) Thank you so much Foxy Dahlings for your support of my writing, your enthusiasm over my books, and your friendship!

I'm really excited to have debut author Erin Kellison as my spotlight author today. I met Erin through my local Romance Writers of America chapter and it's been exciting watching her journey on the road to publication! Erin Kellison is the author of the Shadow Series, which includes SHADOW BOUND and SHADOW FALL. The first was just released and has so far recieved fabulous reviews.

Erin K: First of all, a big thank you to Erin Quinn for sharing her blog with me! Erin K: When I was first beginning Shadow Bound I had a good idea of who my hero, Adam Thorne, and heroine, Talia O’Brien, were as people. I could picture them. I could hear them speak in my head. I knew exactly what they would do next, and why. I can’t say the same of Adam’s good friend, Custo Santovari. I tried to delete him from the manuscript of Shadow Bound several times. He was the guy that did the dirty work for Adam, and I wanted Adam to do his own dirty work, as any hero should. Delete.

A couple days later, I’d be writing him back in again. I didn’t even like him, but I needed him for this spot right here. And that scene. And in the chapter to come. As I was writing, I discovered that Custo wasn’t just a guy who got things done and helped to move the plot for me. In fact, not one of those convenient helper-outer scenes remained. Instead, he became a foil for Adam and Adam’s psychotic brother. In the darkest of times, Custo kept Adam grounded, kept him sane, kept him human.

Something bad happens to Custo in Shadow Bound. Very bad, but critical to the book. One of my critique partners said, “Reconsider. You can’t do that to a sidekick.” I remember reading the message on my computer screen and shaking my head in bafflement. Custo had gone way past sidekick. Custo was a hero.

At least in my mind.

Up until that point, I had never remotely considered writing a book about Custo, but now he was stuck in my head. When I got “The Call” from my editor with an offer for Shadow Bound, she asked if I had ideas for future books. She seemed interested in one direction in particular, but I wanted Custo. I didn’t have a pitch prepared, and had very little of a story in mind. My passion must have come across, however, in the near-incoherent, please-let-me-try plea I gave on behalf of Custo. She asked to see a proposal. Shadow Fall comes out July 27th.

And I’d wanted to delete him altogether in the beginning. Now, frankly, he’s my favorite.

Back to reality

The trouble with vacations is coming back.

In the past I've counteracted this tragedy with taking my work with me--so in fact, I never leave. This trip was different. I needed to unplug or lose my mind. So I unplugged. I lounged on the beach reading other people's books and enjoying myself immensely. But now I'm back and oh, do I have catch up to do. My tan is fading and I still can't get adjusted to my time zone. However, I do feel like I had a vacation and I'm ready...if not quite willing....to get back to work. Picture to the right is of me parasailing. So fun. We saw a whole school of dolphins below us as we floated in the air.

But before I put my nose to the grindstone, I need to shout out about some great books I read over my vacation. I was a pre-reader for Kathryne Kennedy's next installment in her ELVEN LORD'S series. Fabulous and imaginative--readers who loved THE FIRE LORD'S LOVER will be charmed and engrossed by THE LADY OF THE STORM.

Next, I devoured Nalini Singh's BONDS OF JUSTICE. I'm a huge Nalini fan and her Psy-Changling stories are among my favorites. BONDS didn't disappoint. Put it this way--I didn't want to go to dinner because I wanted to keep reading and I really hate to miss a meal. I'm still--ANXIOUSLY--awaiting Hawk's story (hint, hint, Nalini) but every story in this series is just wonderful. Not only are her Psy-Changlings riveting, but her Angel series is fabulous too.

From there I jumped into the TIME WEAVER by Shana Abé. Shana's writing is like music. She creates such a rich and lush world that it's really hard to leave it. The one more page syndrome had me with THE TIME WEAVER and I got a major sunburn because I didn't want to move. Totally worth it. Zane reappears who is one of my favorite of her characters. If you haven't read Shana, really, you're missing out. She is so incredibly gifted that I feel like a hack whenever I finish one of her books.

Then I picked up a reader recommendation--I can't remember WHO told me to read this author, but I am so grateful. I'm just loving Patricia Brigg's Mercy Thompson books. I started MOON CALLED at the airport and finished it shortly after getting home. Couldn't wait to get the second, BLOOD BOUND and last night I started the third, IRON KISSED. I love her weave of history, magic, legend and the "real" world.

There are two books I didn't get to read on vacation that I have burning a hole in my TBR. One is Jennifer Ashley's LADY ISABELLE'S SCANDALOUS MARRIAGE. Jennifer recently won the Crown Books Award for the first in this series, THE MADNESS OF LORD IAN MACKENZIE which is on my keeper shelf forever. So incredibly good. If you love Regency, you will love Jennifer's books (although she doesn't just write Regency. Jennifer is so versatile that she has two successful pen names--Jennifer Ashley and Allyson James--her new STORMWALKER as Allyson is fabulous..

The second is Gini Koch's TOUCHED BY AN ALIEN. I have heard such amazing things about this book that I can't wait to read it. There are more books in this series so I want to read the first so I can be salivating with her other fans for the next!

And now...well, I'm off to get my page count in on the last of the HAUNTING books. If you've suggested a title, the results aren't in yet, so stay tuned. I will announce when I have them for you!

HOW TO TALK TO A DRAGON

My step-by-step guide to speaking with Ador, the black dragon in THE FIRE LORD’S LOVER:

First you have to find him. It’s a good bet that he’s perched in the highest point around, and in Firehame Palace, that would be the north tower. In my new series, THE ELVEN LORDS, there are seven realms created by the elven lords, and each has their own primary magical power and dragon-steeds. For the sovereignty of Firehame, Lord Mor'ded rules with the power of fire and his black scepter is linked with his dragon-steed, Ador. So it’s going to be warm up there in this dragon’s tower, with magical fire licking the walls of the palace and smoke occasionally trickling from Ador’s snout. Wear your lightest mantua, and avoid silk, which easily ignites.

Show no fear, or the dragon will think you are prey and will eat you. (Just kidding. Ador prefers a nice haunch of beef to the bitter taste of humans.)

If the dragon is sleeping, don’t wake him up. (This time, I’m not kidding.) Like dogs, they prefer a good nap to just about anything else. You don’t need to make a sound to let him know of your presence, for he smelled you long before you could see him. Be patient; if he wants to talk to you, umm, it’s his choice.

Try excessive flattery. When Lady Cassandra (the heroine in THE FIRE LORD’S LOVER) first met Ador, she remarked on how beautiful his wings and black scales were, and instantly endeared herself to the dragon.

Try not to get frustrated. Ador has his own hidden agenda, and will often speak obtusely and answer your questions with a remark that might not seem even remotely connected. But time will reveal his wisdom. In the beginning of THE FIRE LORD’S LOVER, my hero, General Dominic Raikes, comments on his impending marriage to Lady Cassandra. Ador replies that he smells a change in the wind, and it takes Dominic some time before he truly understands what the importance of that statement.

As much as you might be tempted, do not ask for the dragon to give you a ride on his back. He would consider it rude. Dominic has always longed for what Ador calls a ‘star dance’, but the dragon only offers when Dominic needs some comfort after discovering the evil that truly lies within Firehame palace.

Ador will be able to read what’s in your heart. Be careful that you truly want the answers to any questions you may ask.

If the dragon hasn’t already ended the conversation by flying away, thank him for his time and back toward the tower doorway, because if he does launch, you’ll need to be prepared for the gust of wind from his wings.

Just reminding you all to stop by on Tuesday when I spotlight one of my favorite authors and her much anticipated book, THE FIRE LORD'S LOVER. If you've frequented my blog, you already know that I was pre-reader for this novel and I loved it. Kathryne Kennedy is one of the authors whose imagination takes you to rare and wonderful places. I know Kathryne personally, and she is a very down to earth and "normal" person (as much as any writer can be normal, ha ha) but the things she thinks of!!! The first book of hers that I read was Enchanting the Lady and I said it had "The imagination of JK Rowling and the romance of Julie Garwood all rolled up into one fabulous novel." I think that is true about all of her books. So fresh and unique and incredibly romantic.

Spotlight on: Jennifer Ashley/Allyson James

Jennifer Ashley (also knowns as Allyson James) is one of those authors that is destined for great things--maybe I should rephrase that. She is already doing great things so she must be destined for amazing ones. :) Her latest release, STORMWALKER, (written as Allyson James) is an urban fantasy set in Arizona. Beyond that, it's an engrossing, wonderful story that melds Native American culture and legends with the harsh reality of the arid and unforgiving lands in Northern Arizona. Janet, the heroine of the story, is child of a goddess from Beneath and a Native American human. She's got some mad skills and she's learning how to use them. Her boyfriend, Mick, is flat out to die for--I can't tell you much more than that because I don't want to give a single spoiler. Just be warned, you're gonna want one of your own. And her host of secondary characters are just a joy to read--even when they aren't playing nice. I think Nash was one of my favorite characters and I am so hoping he gets a lot of "on stage" time in the second book of the series, FIREWALKER.

Not only does Jennifer/Allyson write great paranormal, but she writes amazing historical as well. Her July release, LADY ISABELLA'S SCANDALOUS MARRIAGE, is one I've been anxiously awaiting ever since reading THE MADNESS OF LORD IAN MACKENZIE. If you love historical romance and haven't tried Jennifer Ashley, pick up MADNESS now and I guarantee you'll be hooked. It has one of the most compelling, sexy, broken, amazing heroes I've ever read.

Jennifer/Allyson is a mutl-talented author. I don't know how she writes so many great books or how she keeps it all straight in her head, but she continues to impress me with her story telling.

So, if you're a regular, you know that my hard hitting interviews tend not to be so hard hitting. :) I like to keep it fun.

Erin: Jumping right in: Donna, tell us, What was the best thing that happened to you this month?

Donna: The release of the second bok in my Dark Sword series, FORBIDDEN HIGHLANDER released! That's always such a thrill to see your own book in the stores. Well, and the kids get out of school. That runs a close second. :)

Erin: Well first, CONGRATULATIONS! The second in my series released earlier this month so I know exactly how excited you must be! I've read DANGEROUS HIGHLANDER and thought it was great so I'm really looking forward to diving into the new one!

Next question: What's the kindest act you have ever seen done (either to/by you or another)?

Donna: There was a young boy in our area that needed a bone marrow transplant. None of his family was a match. The story aired on the news, and just days later a man stepped forward who was a match. He didn't know the boy or the boy's family. He did it because he knew he could. It was the ultimate act of kindness. He gave the boy a chance at life.

Erin: I love this question because I always get such incredible answers and it makes me determined to go out and do something good today for another.
What is your favorite way to waste time at work without getting caught? (if writing is your full time job, give me the thing that keeps you from writing)

Donna: Oh there are so many things that I do to waste time. Read emails is a big one. Facebook and Twitter, Sudoku, and the biggest - reading! :)

Erin: I'm with you! I once heard a workshop (and can't remember who did it now) and the speaker said she used to send her modem to school in her kid's backpack to keep away the distractions. Oh, to have such discipline, ha ha. I'm a self-confessed FB junkie.

Last and most important questions, tell me about your new book and what YOU think readers will love about it.

FORBIDDEN HIGHLANDER features the eldest MacLeod brother, Fallon. He has to face his past and his future before he can be the man he's meant to be and lead the Warriors against the villain intent on ruling the world. As one of three brothers, when they fight together, they are the strongest. Yet, the villain has captured Fallon's youngest brother. Its up to Fallon to free his brother before its too late.

What I think readers will enjoy is an unexpected twist that will turn the MacLeod brothers - and all Warriors - on their heels.

Spotlight: Jess Granger's Beyond the Rain

As a rule, I don't read a lot of futuristic fiction . It's not that I have anything against the genre...mostly it's because I'm just not smart enough to keep track of all the creatures, aliens and intergalactic terms. I mention this before I talk about Jess Granger's book, because I think it's important to know that I came to it expecting to be lost, frustrated and generally in agreement with myself that sci-fi and Erin Quinn do not mix.

I'm happy to say that this was not the case. Beyond the Rain was a pleasant surprise and I enjoyed it immensely. The world building was clear and picturesque, the terminology peppered with a light hand that even a novice like me could handle, and the story was moving. I can’t wait to read the next in the series.

Beyond the Rain is the story of Captain Cyani, a woman who is trying to do the right thing for her family by sacrificing herself for the greater good. She is in training to become one of the Elite--the upper echelon of society in the world of Azra. The Elite are cold and heartless--everything Cyani isn't--but she sees her acceptance into their numbers as the only way to help her people.

Enter Soren.

Soren is is a Byralen--a unique and endangered people who are prized for the hormone they create (which is sold as a sexual narcotic). Cyani finds Soren enslaved and half crazed from torture and the imbalance to his system the harvesting of his hormones has caused. She frees him and thus embarks on a journey neither expected.

What I loved about this book was Granger’s people. Cyani is a commander, taught to be stern and unfeeling, yet Granger paints her with feelings, hopes and fears that make her very human. Soren could have easily been squeezed into the alpha male mold that we often see—that of men driven by their chemical makeup to mate. In fact, that is Soren’s exact predicament. Yet Granger gives Soren that something extra that lets him rise above his hormones and become a great hero. He is strong, sexy and dynamic, but inside there is also a very gentle and generous man just looking to be loved and accepted for who he is. I had no problem at all falling in love with him. :)

Granger creates a new world with vivid imagery and peoples it with exciting characters. If you’re looking for something new to read, I recommend giving Beyond the Rain a try. The second book in the series, Beyond the Shadows is on bookshelves now so you won't have to wait for the next story.
